Many people are probably aware that jeans were originally trousers for manual workers, made from heavy cotton that was produced from the vast cotton plantations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rather than being coloured battleship grey the material was generally dyed with indigo, a cheap plant sourced dye that gave a pleasant dark blue colouring that didn't show the dirt too much. It was found, however, that the heavy wear these garments were subjected to took a particular toll of the pockets where the stitching would give way and the pocket pull off. A certain gentleman called Levi Strauss set up business in San Francisco in 1853 and came across an idea from a man called Davis to use metal rivets to hold the pockets on and used the method to good effect.
